Average Reaction Time: The Real Numbers, by Age and by Situation
The average human reaction time is about 250 ms on a simple visual test — but that single number hides more than it tells. Here are the real ranges, how reaction time changes with age, and why yours is a band, not a point.
Search “average reaction time” and you get one confident number: about a quarter of a second. It’s a fine starting point and almost useless on its own, because reaction time isn’t one number — it’s a range that shifts with the kind of test, your age, and what shape you’re in today. Here are the real figures, and how to read your own.
The headline number
On a simple visual reaction test — a light appears, you click — most healthy adults land between 200 and 300 ms, and the commonly cited average is around 250 ms. Two things move that baseline before anything else does:
- The sense you’re reacting to. Sound is faster than sight: auditory reactions average roughly 170 ms, visual around 250 ms, touch in between. Most gaming cues are visual, so 250 ms is the honest reference.
- Simple vs choice. One button for one signal (“simple”) is fastest. Add a decision — left cue means left click, right means right (“choice”) — and everyone slows by 50–150 ms, because now you’re measuring a decision, not just a reflex.
Average reaction time by age
Reaction time follows a long arc across life: fast improvement through childhood, a peak in the late teens to mid-20s, a long slow plateau, then a gradual rise from the 30s onward. The rough shape, on a simple visual test:
- Teens–20s: the floor — many land in the 200–250 ms band, practiced gamers often faster.
- 30s–40s: a modest climb, typically tens of milliseconds slower than the peak.
- 50s and up: a steeper, steady increase — but training and fitness visibly flatten the curve.
The takeaway isn’t “older is slower and that’s that.” It’s that age sets your personal baseline, and the number that matters is always relative to it. A 34-year-old at 240 ms and a 19-year-old at 240 ms are having very different days.
How fast is humanly possible?
The fastest measured simple reactions bottom out near 120–150 ms on standard hardware. Below that you’re almost always measuring the equipment — monitor latency, input polling, the click switch — not a nervous system. Anticipation muddies it too: if you can predict exactly when the signal comes, you’re not reacting, you’re guessing, and a good test flags those false starts instead of counting them.
Why your reaction time is a band, not a number
This is the part the single-number pages skip. Reaction time is one of the most state-sensitive measurements in cognitive science — it swings with sleep, fatigue, stress, caffeine, and time of day. In controlled studies, a single night of sleep loss slows simple reactions by around +49 ms and multiplies attention lapses roughly 5×. That’s the gap between your good band and your bad band, from sleep alone — often larger than the gap between two age groups.
Which is why the useful question is never “what’s the average?” It’s “what’s average for me, and where am I against it right now?” A 220 ms median is a sharp morning for one person and a warning sign for another, and even for the same person it means different things on Tuesday and Saturday.
