How to Increase Your Reaction Time: What Works, What’s a Myth
The honest guide to faster reactions: the handful of things that reliably sharpen reaction time (practice, sleep, state), the popular ones that don’t, and how to tell whether any of it is working for you.
“How do I get faster reactions?” is one of the most-asked questions in competitive gaming, and most answers are either supplement ads or vague hype. Here’s the honest version, sorted by how much evidence actually backs it — plus the one habit that costs nothing and helps most.
First, the honest ceiling
Your raw reaction speed has a floor set largely by biology — nerve conduction, age, genetics — and you will not turn a 250 ms nervous system into a 150 ms one with drills. What you can do is real but bounded: shave your own number toward its personal floor, stop losing tens of milliseconds to bad state, and cut the lapses that hurt far more than your average does. What reliably works
- Task-specific practice. This is the big one. Practicing a reaction task reliably improves your performance on that task — the effect is well established. The catch worth stating plainly: transfer to other tasks is narrow. Drilling a click-reaction test makes you better at click-reaction tests and adjacent motor responses; it is not a general “brain speed” upgrade. Train the specific thing you care about.
- Sleep. The cheapest reaction-time gain on the list, and the largest. A single bad night slows simple reactions by roughly +49 ms and multiplies attention lapses about 5× — bigger than most people’s realistic training gains. - Warming up. Your first attempts of a session are reliably slower than your warmed-in ceiling. A couple of minutes of activation before it counts is free speed — the logic behind a 3-minute warm-up.
- Reducing input latency. Not biological, but real: a high-refresh monitor, a wired low-latency mouse, and a stable frame rate can trim tens of milliseconds off the number you actually experience. Fix the hardware before blaming the human.
Reaction time “exercises” that actually help
If you want to drill, keep it specific and honest about what it trains:

- Choice reaction. Two cues, two responses, under a deadline. This trains the decision-plus-motor loop that actually matters in-game, not just a reflex.
- Tracking and switching. Following multiple objects and flipping rules on a cue are the lab cousins of teamfight awareness and the farm-to-fight transition. They round out the reflex work.
Consistency beats intensity: a few focused minutes daily moves your numbers more than a marathon session once a week.
What doesn’t work (or isn’t proven)
- “Brain training” for general speed. The evidence that brain-training games make you globally faster or smarter is weak; you improve at the games themselves. Useful as targeted reps, not as a general upgrade.
- Most supplements and “nootropics.” Beyond caffeine’s modest, temporary alertness bump, the reaction-time evidence is thin to nonexistent. Spend the money on a better mouse or an earlier bedtime.
- Grinding while tired. Practicing in a degraded state mostly teaches degraded habits and pollutes your sense of your own baseline. Reps count when you’re fresh.
How to know if it’s working
This is where most people go wrong: they “feel” faster and call it progress, or have one bad session and quit. Reaction time is noisy — a single number tells you almost nothing, and your own perception is an unreliable narrator, especially when tired. The only honest read is the trend: your median over weeks, on the same instrument, against your own history.
